While many people may choose the diesel thanks to it having economy that is impressive, you have to bear in mind that it may turn out an expensive option, more so if not enough miles are driven.

With this in mind you may wish to consider the 1.0 petrol version of the Ford B-Max. This gives 99 horses, but don’t let it fool you, it may only be 1.0 litre but it acts more like a 1.6 thanks to the turbocharged engine. This means it does pack quite a punch, but on the other hand take things easier and you should be able to get around 55mpg from it.

While the above is a great option, we chose the 1.4 petrol as it nips along. You may wish to avoid the entry level though and go for the middle of the range Zetec as this gives you more features without breaking the bank.
