We’d recommend a 2.0-litre diesel model. They’re quick and effortless to drive, but most importantly they’re also economical and tax efficient. Our favourite is the 148bhp version, which offers the best blend of price, pace and running costs. The four-wheel-drive twin-turbo 2.0-litre model makes overtaking a breeze, but despite the extra power, it doesn’t feel that much faster than the less powerful versions.
Our favourite trim is SE, which comes with plenty of equipment, including a user-friendly touch-screen infotainment system, front and rear parking sensors, nine airbags and automatic emergency braking. It also has a relatively modest price, whereas the top-end versions are pricey.
In fact, the Passat’s pricing puts it up against mainstream rivals such as the Ford Mondeo, as well as (smaller) cars from premium manufacturers such as Audi and BMW. It stacks up well against them all, so is a fine choice whether you’re a private buyer or company car driver.
